About Us
ARK-Genomics, the Centre for Comparative & Functional Genomics, is based at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. It is a not-for-profit organisation which has established collaborations with researchers from around the world who have an interest in farm animal genomics and genetics.
The aims of ARK-Genomics are:
- Identify traits controlling genes of agricultural and biomedical importance in farm animals.
- Integrate genomics and physiological approaches to gene discovery.
- Develop a functional genomics toolkit, resources and facilities for research in farm animals.
- Co-ordinate a farm animal network to widen the research interests and awareness of this community.
ARK-Genomics was initially set up in 2000 with a grant awarded from the BBSRC's IGF (Investigating Gene Function) initiative and from core resources of Roslin Institute to provide a laboratory for automated analysis of gene expression using state-of-the-art robots and microarray scanners. Since then, ARK-Genomics has secured further funding and has expanded considerably, providing genotyping and Affymetrix capability. ARK-Genomics keeps expanding its infrastructure, biological resources, skills and expertise to enable functional genomics research on farm animals.
ARK-Genomics has established itself as a leader in farm animal functional genomics hosting the largest collection of farm animal EST clones available in the world. The centre has collaborated in the design and construction of 13 different microarrays and now produces a set of standard cDNA or oligonucleotide based microarrays for each of cattle, pigs, chickens and salmon. Multiplexed microsatellite panels are available for each major farm animal species.
From our more than 200 applications we have developed a network of researchers whom we support through their genomics research from grant application to analysis of the complex data produced. This includes the opportunity to engage with other scientists and to raise awareness through training and networking events such as our successful conference series.
