About Us
ARK-Genomics
- Taking projects from grant application stage through to data analysis
- Collaborators from across the world with an interest in genomics & genetics
- Based at the Roslin Institute in Scotland (UK)
ARK-Genomics was initially set up in 2000 with a grant awarded from the BBSRC IGF (Investigating Gene Function) initiative and from core resources of the Roslin Institute to provide a laboratory for automated analysis of gene expression using state-of-the-art genomic facilities. Since then, ARK-Genomics has expanded considerably, building up considerable expertise and resources.
ARK-Genomics is now a high-throughput technology laboratory focussed on studies of genome structure and genetic variation, gene expression and gene function. DNA sequencing of model and non-model genomes uses both Next Generation and Sanger sequencing. While gene expression analysis uses both Next Generation sequencing and high density chip platforms. High throughput genotyping of SNP and copy number variants is performed by next generation sequencing, as wall as bead platforms. Data collection and analysis is supported by local and in-house high performance computing facilities and expertise. The centre also houses and distributes extensive EST clone collections for a number of animal species. Equipped with the latest technology the centre supports more than 1000 scientists from the UK and abroad. Originally focusing on animal research, the centre is now applying the technology to all species from microbes to humans.
ARK-Genomics has a history of expertise in gene expression analysis, working with collaborators from experimental design and technology selection, performing wet laboratory protocols through to the analysis of the data often in conjunction with commercial partners. All of the commercially available microarray tools from Affymetrix, Illumina, Agilent or Nimblegen are available through the ARK-Genomics facility.
The centre is equipped to carry out genotyping analysis using the latest SNP analysis tools from Illumina, capable of screening large numbers of samples from a few SNPs up to 1 million. Other DNA analysis such as comparative genome hybridisation (CGH) and parentage testing, using microsatellites, is also available from our experienced molecular biologists.
From a multitude of applications, ARK-Genomics has developed a network of researchers whom we support through their genomics research from grant application to analysis of the complex data produced. This includes the opportunity to engage with other scientists and to raise awareness through training courses and networking events such as our successful conference series.
ARK-Genomics keeps expanding its infrastructure, biological resources, skills and expertise -explore how we might be able to help you.
